French Love London Even Above Paris in Tourism Report

Hpliday hypermarket reports that despite the rivalry between the French and English capitals, London has been given high praise by being placed even above Paris in a French Regional Tourism Committee (CRT) report.

According to the Daily Mail News website, the French have conceded that London often outperforms Paris in terms of providing a warm welcome for visitors with better quality cheap hotels and a cleaner, more efficient transport system. While Paris still has plenty of strengths to be proud of, the CRT officials admitted that there was definite room for improvement.

The report placed London in first place out of six major European capitals with an impressive score of 82 out of 100. The capital outperformed Paris in its ability to provide appealing accommodation, excellent transport around the capital and even the variety of its cuisine.

Paris was a very close joint-second with Amsterdam, however. With a score of 79 each, they still represented hugely appealing travel choices for a city break.

Paris is officially the world's most popular capital city tourist destination in terms of the number of visitors who head there every year.

Madrid and Rome took joint-third place with 76 each. This left Germany's Berlin trailing in last place with a still respectable 74.

One area which hampered London's score a little was the lack of widespread foreign language use in the capital. CRT officials noted that while English, French and Spanish are widely used in Paris, English is the only major European language often used in London.

However, this slight language barrier issue did not impact significantly on London's overall welcoming atmosphere too badly as it romped home to first place.

Christmas in Trafalgar Square, London

The 2010 Trafagar Square Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place on 2 December.

Each year since 1947, a Christmas tree has been given to the people of London from the people of Norway in gratitude for Britain's support for Norway during World War II. For many Londoners the Christmas tree and carol singing in Trafalgar Square signal the countdown to Christmas.

The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is usually a Norwegian spruce (Picea abies) over 20 metres high and 50-60 years old. It is selected from the forests surrounding Oslo with great care several months, even years, in advance. The Norwegian foresters who look after it describe it fondly as 'the queen of the forest'.

The tree is felled in November during a ceremony in which the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the British ambassador to Norway and the Mayor of Oslo participate. It is brought to the UK by sea, then completes its journey by lorry. A specialist rigging team erects it in the square using a hydraulic crane. It is decorated in traditional Norwegian fashion, with vertical strings of lights - energy-efficient light bulbs are used.

Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern lines) is the closest Tube station, with an entrance/exit on Trafalgar Square.

The following stations are within a few minutes' walk:

Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly lines)
Piccadilly Circus (Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines)
Embankment (Bakerloo, Northern, District and Circle lines)

The next Lord Mayor's Show is this Saturday, on 13th November 201,0 and will start at 11am.The modern procession is over three miles long – almost twice as long as the route it follows – and starts at 11am. The procession sets off on the return journey from Victoria Embankment to Mansion House at 1pm and returns to Mansion House at about 2.30, then the day finishes with one of London's grandest firework displays at 5 o'clock from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges.

It's a full day out for the family, with lots to do and see.Book your London Hotel for this 880 year old tradition.
